Air conditioners almost always give warning before they quit — a longer run time, a warmer house in the afternoon, a new noise outside. Most of the emergency calls we run in July were fixable in June for a fraction of the cost.
When it does quit, the diagnosis matters more than the part. A system that is low on refrigerant is low for a reason, and simply adding more means you will be calling again next season. We find the leak.

Air moves but it is not cold. The indoor half is working and the outdoor half is not — which narrows it down quickly.

A frozen evaporator coil is a symptom, never the disease. Turn the system off and call — running it iced can kill the compressor.

You hear a hum or a click and then nothing. Often a cheap electrical part rather than the compressor itself — worth diagnosing before anyone quotes you a new system.

Refrigerant is a closed loop — it does not get used up. If you are low, there is a leak, and topping it off without finding it is money out the window.

Screeching, grinding, or a hard rattle from the condenser is worth stopping the system for. Running through it usually turns a small repair into a big one.

Air conditioners are more replace-or-repair sensitive than furnaces, because refrigerant type matters.
When replacement is the right call, all of it is in the quoted price. Nothing new appears on installation day.
Sized to the house, not to whatever was there before. An oversized AC cools fast, shuts off, and leaves the house clammy — the classic symptom of a system sold by the ton instead of by the math.

The outdoor condenser, indoor coil, and blower have to be a matched set to hit the rated efficiency. Mismatched systems are common and they quietly cost you every summer.

Most often refrigerant, airflow, or the outdoor unit not running. Start by checking the filter and that the outdoor breaker has not tripped — beyond that it needs gauges on the system, which we do free.
Air moving without cooling almost always means the outdoor half of the system has stopped — commonly a failed capacitor or contactor. Those are among the least expensive repairs there are.
Refrigerant is a sealed loop and does not get consumed. If the system is low, it is leaking. Topping it up buys a season at best and vents refrigerant into the atmosphere at worst — we find the leak instead.
No-cooling calls are prioritized through the summer, same day whenever the route allows. Call rather than booking online if the house is dangerously hot.
Installed cost depends on size, efficiency tier, and whether the line set and ductwork need work. We quote the full installed number in writing after seeing the house.
